Stark Sigil Tattoo - David "Lodengarl" McCaman
To raise money for the BwB to host events at the 2003 Worldcon in Toronto,
where George was Guest of Honor, I decided to help boost contributions to
the fund by setting a goal, which if met, would require me to get the Stark
sigil tattooed on my left shoulder. Many generous people donated to the BwB
and we did make our goal and pulled off an outstanding Worldcon, complete with
parties, ice sculpture, and the best t-shirts around.

When I arrived in Toronto the Wednesday before Worldcon, my roomie, Padraig,
and myself walked the streets of downtown looking for the tattoo parlor where
I wanted to get inked. I carried a hi-res print of Moria Peter's design
but the parlor I wanted to get it done at was booked up. When I took it to
another shop the owner told me he would have to redraw the image because of
the fine hair and detail which would not last on an area the size of a shoulder.
Since we were only in town for a few days, I decided to wait. It was disappointing at the time.
A month before Worldcon in Boston, the following year, I went ahead with a redraw
and the ink, at a place in San Francisco called One Shot Tattoo, under Sky's care
and expertise. I love the shading he did on the crest and the direwolf, but the lettering
was the most creative part, and my favorite part of the design. I was able to show
it to George, Parris, and the rest of our group in Boston, and I couldn't be happier.
The Starks are my favorite house in the novels. Eddard my favorite character. My
love of the series makes the tattoo a great piece to wear, but for me, the true significance
of the tattoo rests outside the novels and in the words. "Winter is Coming." This means more
to me than just being the Stark words in my favorite novels. For me, it is something to always remember,
that bad things, and ultimately, the endless Winter, are in the future and can never be avoided,
and by preparing for them, and by enjoying the good times even more, life rests in balance.
For me, this is my favorite part . . .
