A fantastic tradition that came about by happenstance is now one of the signature aspects of the Brotherhood without Banners. At the first annual BwB Worldcon Gathering, in Philadelphia (PhilCon) in 2001, Aghrivaine discovered our group, and let us in on his secret – that he wanted George R. R. Martin to knight him with Aghrivaine’s own sword. As he told us of his plan, we all wanted to be in on the fun as well. Aghrivaine returned the next day with his sword, and approached GRRM that night at our BwB party. George got a kick out of the idea, but wasn’t going to go around making knights that easy. He deemed that to be worthy of knighthood, we must survive the party and stay awake long enough to make a late-night run to Pat’s Steaks in downtown Philly. Only then would we be worthy of knighthood. Thus, the Knights of the Cheesesteak were formed in front of Pat’s at 3 am during Worldcon.

The tradition continued the following year at the annual Gathering at Worldcon San Jose (ConJosé). This time, the knighting took place after the First Annual Trivia Contest, hosted by GRRM. Those who survived the contest (shots for hints) were knighted as the order of Knights Who Say "Hint!"

The following year, at George’s Guest of Honor celebration at Worldcon Toronto, during the commemorative BwB party, George announced that those BwB members which attended the last three years of Worldcons, would be honored with the titles of Lord or Lady . . . petty Lords and Ladies, but still . . . Lords and Ladies. Following the Second Annual Trivia Contest, and raffle, during Torcon, when the BwB honored GRRM with a made-from-scratch Lamprey Pie (another of Aghrivaine’s ideas!), George honored the BwB with its third order of knights, the Knights of the Lamprey Pie.

For the fourth annual Gathering at Noreascon (Worldcon) 2004, those seeking knighthood were given the toughest quest yet for a BwB member. George insisted that anyone who wished to be knighted make a quest to Kelly's Roast Beef sandwiches, at Revere Beach — a good 30-40 minute drive from the Sheraton. They couldn't go to a closer Kelly's, but had to get sandwiches from the Kelly's at Revere Beach. Late on Sunday evening a large group left for their quest, with orders in hand from those already knighted, and George himself. Several hours later, the quest was completed, and sandwiches were delivered. They had to ride in the back of a pickup truck, wait in long lines, and deal with inebriated locals, but they did not fail. The sandwiches were amazing.

George also started a new recognition for fans — giving out Mardis Gras beads! Those who attended past Worldcons were given strands of beads, and those three lucky enough to have attended all four Worldcons (Padraig, Lannister, Lodengarl) received entry into the order of the Flamingos, with beads and all.

The first knighting ceremony to be held outside of Worldcon was at ConQuesT 2005 in Kansas City. No one had a sword, but they did manage to track down a lightsaber. George was very dubious about dubbing BwB knights with a lightsaber, but eventually he decided to send them on a quest. They were to acquire burnt ends, and bring them back to him. "What’s a burnt end?" was the response. George was under the impression that the main Gates BBQ was open all night, but it was not, and being late, they had few options — heading to Tom Fooleries nightclub to see if their kitchen was open . . . denied! Local cops suggested checking the dumpster of a nearby restaurant for leftovers and if not there, maybe the Ameristar Casino (45 minutes away) . . . denied . . . denied! Almost out of options, the group went to Hy-Vee and asked for the closest thing to burnt ends. With Hormell BBQ brisket, jar of sauce, rolls, and a foil pan, and after a quick stop at Wal-Mart for a grill, the group returned nearby the hotel to produce their own burnt ends.

Two hours after they began their quest, they presented George with the two sandwiches that they had lovingly created for him. He was highly unimpressed with them, and pointed out that they were just barbecue, not burnt ends. He also didn’t seem to believe their tale until the digital cameras were produced. Then he was quite impressed.

After some debate, George gave them a choice between being "Knights of the Dumpster" or "(Un)Sullied Squires" - but saying they were not Unsullied, they chose to become Sullied Knights of the Dumpster.

At Worldcon 2005 in Glasgow, the most appropriate knighting quest was undertaken, with many groups heading out to find haggis. Whether it was trips down to Sauchiehall Street, or calling up the hotel kitchen, haggis, deep-fried haggis, and even a deep-fried Mars bar were presented to George, and the Knights of the Haggis were born. Four new Lords and Ladies were given their very deserving style, and Padraig became the first of the Brotherhood to be given the title of Prince!
